International Women’s Day: Celebrating Women in Basketball

Hosted by She Hoops and Jayco, with support from the WNBL and Tissot, this event will bring together leading voices in Australian basketball to explore the power of sport to drive change.

This International Women’s Day event brings together some of the most influential voices in Australian basketball to explore the power of sport to shape culture, influence society and create opportunity.

Through two panel conversations, the event examines what it means to balance the scales, recognising the progress made within women’s basketball while exploring the opportunities and responsibilities that exist today. With basketball as the lens, the discussions highlight how players, leaders and advocates are driving change on and off the court, and shaping what comes next for the game and the communities it reaches.

Designed as a thought leadership forum, the event centres conversation, connection and contribution, elevating lived experience, diverse perspectives and the collective role we all play in shaping the future of women’s sport.

Conversation 1: The Power of the Game

Rana Hussain | Michelle Timms OAM OLY | Steph Reid

This conversation explores the power of sport to influence culture, challenge norms and show what’s possible.

Bringing together Michelle Timms’ experience as a trailblazer who opened international pathways, Steph Reid’s perspective as a current international athlete, and Rana Hussain’s system-level insight across sport and governance, the discussion examines the opportunity that exists right now — not only within basketball, but across sport more broadly — to elevate voices, create opportunity and drive progress well beyond the court.

Conversation 2: Shaping the Future

Lauren Jackson AO OLY | Leanne Del Toso PLY | WNBL Players

Centred on contribution, influence and lived experience, this conversation explores how the future of the game is shaped.

Featuring Lauren Jackson’s leadership across the basketball system, Leanne Del Toso’s advocacy and lived experience, and current WNBL players navigating professional sport today, the discussion focuses on responsibility and possibility and how today’s players and leaders can help create environments where the next generation can belong, lead and thrive.
